Material Matters artists will respond to key themes in the Gawain poem across three exhibitions: Nature curated by Patric Rogers from 1st Aug - 13th Sep, Chivalry curated by John Elcock from 19th Sep - 25th Oct and Spirituality curated by Angelo Madonna from 7th Nov - 21st Dec. Weavers a parallel programme of performance, talks, workshops and readings will be curated by Silvia Battista.

Gawain is a masterpiece text of the Middle Ages. The poem tells the story of King Arthurs headstrong young nephew who after a dramatic bargain with a mysterious figure faces a long journey in which he must, quite literally, keep his head. Sir Gawains quest into the wilderness of the Wirral is a fourteenth century narrative that will be given a radical 21st century interpretation by the artists.

The group explores the inter-relationship between materiality and performance under a collaborative praxis we call emotional minimalism developed to explore the subjective affects of creative perception and process.

                               'MM Manifesto'

MATERIAL MATTERS (MM) is an artists' collective engaged in artistic and curatorial practices that explore the inter-relationship between materiality, aesthetics and performativity under a collaborative praxis we call emotional minimalism.

Emotional Minimalism stands for the agency of materiality to elicit human emotions when enacted in devised spaces and under controlled conditions.

WE ARE INTERESTED in myth-making processes that are able to transform human perception and invite awareness to the profound entanglement underlying all bodies and forms of materiality.

WE ENGAGE with both mythopoeic and mythopoetic processes by playing with the invention of new mythologies and the interpretation of inherited stories.

WE CREATE aesthetic experiences to explore the art of storytelling by involving materials as the activating forces embedded in language/s that are multiple and often unknown to us: human, non-human and beyond-human.

WE WORK with multidisciplinary contemporary aesthetics to bring the intangible into the spectrum of human perception.

WE COLLABORATE with institutions, artists, communities and educational environments to involve the public into spiritually-enriching experiences that might sometimes be challenging.

WE BELIEVE that art should be able to enter into and inform all corners of society, encouraging us to feel more and adapt to our ever-changing world.

WE INVITE you to explore our projects, to experience the spirits of matter through the power of the poetic!

MM members: Angelo Madonna, John Elcock, Patrick Rogers, and Silvia Battista
